Puddling around Pine Creek and Burbling around Batchelor

Hello dear blogsters, well here we are at Batchelor - on the edge of the Litchfield National Park... after a couple of very gentle days of travel.

We left Victoria River and travelled up to Katherine - where Danni and I headed for the supermarket to get some groceries. Being in a shopping centre after our days out in the middle of nowhere seemed a bit like being on some other planet. It all seemed too noisy, too crowded and too much trouble!

Anyway, we tootled on from Katherine towards Pine Creek. We turned off just before the little township and followed a dirt road out to the Copperwood Dam, where we set up camp for the night. This lovely, little, free camping spot is surrounded by woodland and right on the banks of a beautiful dam. After lunch, we headed down for a swim. Mum and Dad went in first (to clear the crocs out for us) - and then I followed. Uncle John and Danni were wimps - I think they were nervous about cold water or crocs or something - anyway they didn't get in. (Danni had her swimmers on, but when the phone rang and it was her Mum, I have never seen her disappear in the opposite direction to the water so fast! She managed to make the phone call last until we had just got out of the water - funny that!)

We had a lovely night camped out, then set off this morning towards Litchfield National Park. We took a scenic detour to Adelaide River through some beautiful bushland (copperwood trees with an understorey of palms - also lots of little bridges over crystal clear streams). We arrived at Adelaide River and went for a look at the War Cemetary. The soldiers who died in the Japanese Bombing raids over Northern Australia are buried here - it is a very peaceful and moving place.... looking at the headstones and the ages of the young men who died just emphasised the absolute tragedy and futility of war!
After this, we went to the Adelaide River Inn to have some Barramundi and Chips for lunch. Dad remembered coming here 10 years ago and has been talking about it all through this trip - so we could hardly drive straight past it. Inside the bar is the stuffed body of the water buffalo which was used in Crocodile Dundee (apparently he died 8 years ago - Mum, Dad and Uncle John remembered seeing him alive).
We had a terrific lunch - Dad reckoned the Barra was just as good as last time!
We continued on to Batchelor - arriving relatively early in the afternoon and are now set up in a beautiful camp site with green lawns, big shady trees, palms and a pool - what more could we ask for!
Ok, I have been giving others on the trip access to the blog every now and then, Paddy says it is his turn - so, with a little trepidation - here is Paddy's blog entry.
PADDY'S BLOG
Hello humans and the odd fellow Beany Bear who may be reading this blog (and especially hello to "Star Bear" - the bear with the cute silver hair and the star minni-skirt.... rooooow).
This trip has been sometimes interesting and sometimes boring. The Nerrida person lets me drive sometimes and I like that. She also takes me on tours and stuff..... but only when she feels like it. She did some mean things to me at Coral Bay (I still have nightmares about being buried in the sand) - and sometimes she just leaves me on the dashboard in the sun for ages. Talk about cruelty to bears!!!!
I have lost weight and have to beg for food.... today I had to plead to be given a chip whilst they were feasting on fish! And as for the drinking thing - I am lucky to get a sip of water every few days. I think there is some united nations convention against this sort of treatment to beanie bears!
Anyway, I shall try to get back on to the computer when I can - I know there are a lot of you out there who are concerned for me and I am touched by your concern!
Love..... the bear.
Addendum to blog. Hello blogsters - Nerrida here again - I just couldn't let what the bear wrote go without comment. To have such hurtful untruths written by my best-friend bear is just.... unbearable! Here are some photos to prove that the bear was, indeed, very well fed today. Also - a couple of pics of his drinking habits. A picture is worth a thousand words they say..... back into therapy for the bear I think!
