A Day of Rest

Today I have had a rest day. We got up early and I couldn't believe the line of people heading over to the laundry to do the washing before the sun was even up! I wandered over to the beach and sat for a while before coming back for breakfast.

The travelling community is interesting. Latest estimates are that there are over 150 000 caravan rigs on the road in Australia at any given time. It's a bit of a worry as many we see are "SKIs" retired people intent on "spending the kids' inheritance". Some of the rigs are incredible, worth between $200 000 and half a million dollars. I wonder what will happen to our economy when they have spent it all and the next generation have nothing to inherit!

On the positive side, people are really friendly and willing to chat. The first question is always "where are you from?" and the next is "where are you going?". There are some really interesting people with great stories and hints for the road ahead. We are already having to change our plans for Broome as we hear it is impossible to get a site in the caravan parks and there is no free roadside camping anywhere near. We will work out what to do as we get closer.

OK, well just a short one today.... I am going back to my bed for a good lie down!

Hi Nerrida
It's pouring rain here and I put my electric blanket on my bed today so I guess it's farewell to warm weather. I just can't imagine sleeping in the open like you do you brave thing you.
Enjoying your blog and yes I love finding birds too. I travelled (only half-way) around Oz a few years ago and the wild life was amazing..especially in the NT. I stayed in Humpty Doo in Darwin for 3 months..are you heading there? I need to get my Aussie map out and follow your progress. Take care and ENJOY!
