A Huge Day - into South Australia

What a difference a day makes! Our night was almost warm and I slept with the top of my swag open, with the stars above me - bliss!

We got an early start (away by 7.30) and drove through to Cobar, stopping at the Hermidale Pub for a photo (too early for a beer) as Clem owns a block of land at the thriving metropolis of Hermidale.

Then from Cobar we started the long haul through to Broken Hill. It's almost 500km with only Wilcannia in the middle to break the drive. I was really pleased to get my first drive in since I was sick - Mum "allowed" me to drive for 2 one hour stints. Fred the beast is travelling beautifully and I am pretty wrapped with the 24.6 mpg I got today - not bad considering I am towing a well packed trailer.

We stopped just before Broken Hill to juice the oranges and eat the apples before going through the fruit fly block. We also had to change our clocks to SA time (we will change them again tonight for the end of daylight saving).

We planned to stop just out of Broken Hill, but didn't think much of the roadside stops so we just continued on. We were then going to stop at the Rec oval in Yunta, but there was a big 50th birthday bash on and we didnt think that would make for a good night's sleep. We finally stopped about 30 km out of Peterborough (thought it time to pull up when a couple of kangaroos hopped in front of our cars on the road). We have found a nice road side stop back from the road, with the Flinders Ranges making the view on the horizon. It was so lovely to finally be stopped after more than 800 km driving today. We set up the van and my lovely swag outside and then sat in the twilight drinking a beer and watching the micro bats circling above us.

The bird highlight of the day was a pair of absolutely magnificent wedge tailed eagles sitting on a post just out of Yunta - they are truly magnificent creatures.

Tomorrow will be a much shorter day - just a short 200 km hop to Wilmington where we will me Uncle John.
